African forest elephant status report 2024

The IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG) has released the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) status report 2024, marking a major milestone for science-based conservation in Africa. This is the first time forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) have been assessed independently from African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana), reflecting growing recognition of their distinct ecology, distribution, and conservation challenges.
